Russian Doll and Peacock Feathers | Fabric Painting

Image
More illustrated tote bags! I painted peacock feathers and a matryoshka doll on a black tote bag I had sewn myself. I sketched the image with a white colored pencil and then painted over it using red and white fabric paint and a paint brush. After that the procedure is the same as with this fabric print : let it dry for 24 hours, iron it and wash it. I made this bag in 2011 and it got a lot of use as a beach bag in Egypt that summer.

Alcudia Old Town | Mallorca

Image
Old town Alcudia, Mallorca. / Alcudian vanha kaupunki Mallorcalla. We visited the Sunday market in the old town of Alcudia (the market is also held on Tuesdays). Old town was a 30 minute walk from our hotel (Alcudia Beach), but you can also use a mini tourist train to move around Alcudia. The marketplace was very crowded, but there were also quiet, little alleys inside the old town walls. Clothes, jewellery and bags are some of the things that were sold in the marketplace. We also went to a little handicraft shop and bought an owl decoration. And we dropped in at a church in old town and a cemetery on the way. Markkinoilla myyti

Flower with a Doll's Face | Acrylic Painting

Image
Doll Face Flower. Acrylics on canvas, 30 x 30 cm, May 2014. I got the idea for a flower with a doll's face from a plate in a magazine and made my own version of the theme. I also had fun painting make-up for the flower's face. I blended blue, pink and purple for the background. See progress photos below. Sain idean maatuskakasvoisen kukan maalaamiseen lehtikuvan lautasesta ja tein aiheesta oman versioni. Töpöttelin taustaan sinistä, pinkkiä ja violettia. Vaihekuvia alla.

Elephants in a Bag | Fabric Printing

Image
I decorated another tote bag. I sewed the bag myself quite a while ago and painted the elephants one day last autumn while listening to one of Henning Mankell's Wallander audio books. I was having a break from work/study for a few days and my way to unwind was to go pick mushrooms and do crafty things like this fabric printing project. Tässä taas yksi kuvitettu kangaskassi. Ompelin kassin itse muutama vuosi sitten ja maalasin siihen norsuja eräänä päivänä viime syksynä, kuunnellen yhtä Henning Mankellin Wallanderia äänikirjana. Pidin muutaman päivän taukoa töistä/opinnoista ja rentouduin sienestämällä ja esim. tällä kankaanpainantaprojektilla.

Bike Ride to Port de Pollença | Mallorca

Image
The Ironman triathlon was held in Alcudia, Mallorca at the time of our trip and there were a lot of cyclists around. We, too, rented bikes from the hotel one day and took a bike ride to the beautiful Port de Pollença. (They only lent bikes, not helmets.) So here are views from the road and from the harbor of Pollença. By the way, when going on a bike trip in Mallorca, remember to reapply sunscreen every once in a while. I managed to burn the backs of my hands and my shoulders on this cycling trip.

Diamond Collage Box Decoration and Card

Image
I decorated yet another box. This is one where I keep some of my paints and other art supplies. The box was originally silver color and I covered it by making a collage of diamond (or rhombus) shaped magazine cut-outs. I drew a shape I liked on grid paper, cut it out (if you fold the paper first and then cut, you can make it more symmetric) and used it to make a more durable model on cardboard. You can download and print out my diamond template right here , if you prefer. And then I used the model to cut out diamonds from magazine pictures I liked. I glued them on the box, leaving small margins between the diamonds and finally covered the whole thing with contact paper. Piirsin haluamani muodon ensin ruutupaperille, leikkasin

DIY Kimono

Image
I haven't been sewing in a long time but lately I've been wanting to start again. So I made this beach kimono for my Gran Canaria trip (I came back last week). I used lightweight, flowy fabric that's a bit transparent. It's easiest to make a kimono of a big scarf, but I didn't have one. I bought this fabric from the flea market a few years ago and I've used it for a shirt/tunic before.  I got the basic instructions from this video . I cut out a 150 x 70 cm piece of the fabric. I folded the fabric and cut the upper layer in half and a little triangle on top for the neckline (see the white dashed line in the picture below). And then I cut little sleeves. The height of the sleeve is about 30 cm and the width of the narrowed part (that I cut off) was 10 cm. (Sorry about the wrinkled fabric, I ironed it after cutting.)  En ole käyttänyt ompelukonetta pitkään aikaan, mutta viime aikoina ompelu on alkanut taas kiinnostaa. Tein siis Gran Canarian lomamatkalle

S'Albufera Natural Park | Mallorca

Image
S'Albufera natural park in Alcudia, Mallorca. / S'Albuferan luonnonpuisto Alcudiassa, Mallorcassa. Quack, quack! We took a little walk one afternoon from the hotel to the natural park of s'Albufera in Playa de Muro, Alcudia. The walk there and back (+ the little lap we did at the park) turned out to be 14 km. Oops. The park closed already at 6 pm and we were in a bit of a hurry to run out of there before the gates were locked.  What I remember from s'Albufera was the high reeds. Really high. 4-5 m high. We did see a few birds from the bird watching booths (what are they really called?), but mostly we just heard Donald Duck noises from the bed of reeds. We did spot Upupa epops , though (the hoopoe, no picture, I had just written down the funny name in my notes). Kaislikossa suhisee. Tai kvaakkuu... Teimme eräänä iltapäivänä pienen kävelylenkin hotellista Alcudian Playa de Murossa sijaitsevaan s'Albuferan luonnonpuistoon. Matkaa sinne ja takaisin (+ luonnonpu

Huge Mail Update | Sent Letters

Image
These are letters and cards I've sent a long time ago (2012-2013) that never made it to the blog for one reason or another. But I found the photos and wanted to share them with you. The first summery letter on penguin paper and a moomin card in a transparent envelope was sent to Norway. I made the transparent envelope by cutting a suitable piece of a plastic pocket and sewing it shut and covering the stitches with tape.

Majorica Pearls and Stalactite Caves | Mallorca

Image
Stalactite cave / Tippukiviluola As mentioned before , we had an organized day trip to the east side of Mallorca on our vacation. The trip included a visit to the Majorica Pearls factory in Manacor. The pearls are made by melting glass and they're dyed with silver dye gotten from fish scales, for example. Kuten aiemmin mainitsin, kävimme Mallorcan matkalla järjestetyllä retkellä saaren itäosassa. Retki alkoi vierailulla helmitehtaassa Manacorissa. Majorica-helmet tehdään sulatetusta lasista ja värjätään esimerkiksi kalansuomuilla.
