Sugar Skull Girl Acrylic Painting on Cardboard

My newest acrylic painting is a portrait of La Calavera Catrina or a sugar skull girl. Catrina, a skeleton woman dressed in nice clothes, is the icon for the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos). José Guadalupe Posada's original La Calavera Catrina was a satire of indigenous upper class Mexican people who imitated European style and made their skin look white with makeup, denying their own cultural heritage. Diamond Collage Box Decoration and Card

I decorated yet another box. This is one where I keep some of my paints and other art supplies. The box was originally silver color and I covered it by making a collage of diamond (or rhombus) shaped magazine cut-outs. I drew a shape I liked on grid paper, cut it out (if you fold the paper first and then cut, you can make it more symmetric) and used it to make a more durable model on cardboard. You can download and print out my diamond template right here , if you prefer. And then I used the model to cut out diamonds from magazine pictures I liked. I glued them on the box, leaving small margins between the diamonds and finally covered the whole thing with contact paper. Koristelin taas yhden säilytyslaatikoistani. How to Prepare Cardboard for Acrylic Painting

Would you like to paint on cardboard, but have noticed that the paint soaks into and you can't achieve bright colors? I'll show you how to prepare a piece of cardboard for painting with gesso primer. Cardboard works for both acrylic and oil painting and you might sometimes want to use it instead of canvas, board, wood or paper to save money or to be more environmentally friendly.

How to Transfer Sketch onto Painting Surface

As I've mentioned before, I don't usually draw my sketches for paintings straight onto watercolor paper or canvas. I draw the sketch on a separate paper, where it's easier to erase and clean up the outlines and then transfer the finished sketch onto my painting surface. In this  blog post I'll list five different methods to transfer your drawing onto the painting surface. They're all either cheap or completely free. Some require a computer or other technology and some don't. So hopefully, if you're struggling with how to transfer your sketches, one of these methods (or a combination of some of them) will suite your budget and the supplies you already have available.
