DIY Notebook Cover Ideas | Back to School 2016

Image
It's been a while since I've done some mindfulness crafting by cutting up old magazines. I just find it so relaxing to to flip through old magazines, find pictures and pages I like and cut shapes out of them. So here are 3 DIY notebook cover ideas for school etc. Decorate three notebook covers by recycling old magazines into chevron patterns, diamonds and Matryoshka dolls. These DIY notebook cover ideas are suitable for kids and teenagers and why not adults too.

DIY Willow Ball Garden Decoration | Nature Craft

Image
I've admired the willow balls and statues at Koiramäen Pajutalli (Doghill's Willow Stable) for a long time and so my first nature craft this spring is a willow ball. I think willow balls are the perfect decoration to hang in your apple tree or another big tree in the garden. It's not a completely solid ball so you can see the light through it (as in the shadow in the photo above), making a lovely silhouette. I shot the process on video . And I also made an updated version of a moss ball . Olen ihaillut Koiramäen Pajutallin pajupalloja ja -patsaita jo pitkään ja pajupallosta tulikin tämän kevään ensimmäinen luonnonmateriaaleista tehty käsityöprojektini. Pajupallot sopivat esimerkiksi omenapuun tai muun ison puun koristeiksi. Kuvasin työn vaiheet myös videolle . Tein myös päivitetyn version sammalpallosta .

DIY Galaxy Pencil Holder / Flower Pot | Recycled Craft

Image
Galaxy pencil holder. Galaxy crafts and paintings have been popular for a few years, but I just decided to have a go at it for the first time. I had fun painting the last yogurt bucket flower pots so I made a galaxy version of them. You can use these recycled yogurt buckets as flower pots for home decor or as pencil holders for desk organization . Scroll down for the instructions or watch how to make them .

DIY Gradient and Tribal Flower Pots

Image
If you feel like you never have enough pots for flowers or houseplants, this is a cheap way to make some cute ones yourself. You can turn old yogurt buckets into flower pots by covering up the original text and pictures with acrylic paint and removing the handle.  If you eat yogurt a lot (I do, with berries) and have a lot of these 1 liter yogurt buckets, you could make themed flower pots for different seasons (like red, green and gold for Christmas and pastel colors for spring). You can also use these pots as pencil holders etc. for desk organization. Watch the video tutorial or read on for tips and ideas on decorating old yogurt containers.

Decorated Shoebox | Recycle DIY

Image
As you may know, my favorite kind of storage boxes are old shoeboxes . I use them especially to store letters, cards, envelopes and art and craft supplies. Decorating them with magazine pages, used wrapping paper, book pages, decorative cardboard (Lidl's facial tissue boxes!), used stamps and old entrance tickets etc. makes them pretty and personal (and they're free , because recycling old materials) . The newest boxes I've covered using a collage technique. I cut out symmetric diamonds (rhombus shape), preferably several of each color/pattern and arrange them to cover the whole box. Cutting and gluing all the pieces takes a while, but I like the result. A shortcut is to cover a few sides with the diamonds and just glue whole magazine pages on the rest of them. Finally I cover the decorative storage box with contact paper so it's fine to wipe off any dust etc. without ruining the paper collage. I always do it in several parts and tuck the edges inside the box. I filme...

Matryohska Doll Birthday Card DIY

Image
I made a Matryoshka doll birthday card for my niece's 5th birthday. The base is pre-cut pink card stock. I used my old matryoshka doll templates (ones I made for bookmarks and fridge magnets ) to cut out the top and bottom half of the doll from magazine pages and the face from beige copy paper (looks yellow in the photos). I also cut out the number 5 from a sparkly magazine picture. I used a paper punch to make some flower shapes and glued everything on the card base. I wanted to cut cut pretty borders for the whole card, but I had forgotten how dull my decorative border scissors are and only cut one side.  I used a black fineliner, colorful Stabilo fineliners and colored pencils to draw the doll's face and make up. White gel pen is good for bringing out the white parts in the eyes. Finally I wrote a birthday wish inside with a calligraphy pen (ZIG, Kuretake). Watch the video (card making + snowy winter views) on my Youtube channel. I also have a printable PDF with differ...

Handmade Baby & Birthday Cards

Image
My 4-year-old niece and I made a heart-shaped greeting card for her new little sister. We both decorated our own side of the card. I opted for pink paper on the purple cardstock, paper embossing, white rubber stamp and gold stickers.  Tein siskontytön kanssa sydämen muotoisen kortin tämän uudelle pikkusiskolle. Koristelimme kumpikin oman puolen kortista. Käytin violettiin korttiin vaaleanpunaista paperia, lahjapaperista leikattuja kuvia, kohopainantaa, valkoista leimasinta ja kultatarroja.

Warm DIY Christmas Mitten Cards

Image
I made some Christmas cards with my 4-year-old niece. The mitten idea is from a craft magazine. We used pieces of packaging cardboard (that happened to be red on one side) as the background, scrapping paper and old wrapping paper for the mittens, yarn, washi tape, general glue diluted in water and "Merry Christmas" stickers. Teimme 4-vuotiaan siskontytön kanssa lapasaiheisia joulukortteja. Idea on Ihana-lehden numerosta 4/2013.

Arts & Crafts Fair 2015

Image
ViaMINNET:in värikkäitä nahkakoruja. Helsingin Messukeskuksen Meidän viikonlopussa tuli taas pyörähdettyä. Siskon lapset olivat mukana, joten suuntasimme ensin pupuja paijaamaan Lemmikkiosastolle. I went to a joined arts and crafts and pets (and a few other things) fair in Helsinki last Sunday and shot a short video of the craft stands (candy jewellery, Christmas cards and other colorful pieces) and bunnies.

Diamonds on a Shoebox | Recycle DIY

Image
Decorated box number 6. If I counted right. And it's another diamond collage. I've now used that style for boxes, cards , flower pots and a painting . I made this one while having a flu (and the last one while having chickenpox...). It's not the fastest way to cover a box so it's good for times when you can't leave the house for a couple of days. The materials I used for this were essentially trash: an old shoebox, magazine pictures, paint chips and an empty tissue box (with a nice print on it). I cut out diamond shapes of pictures I liked using a stencil I drew before and glued them on the shoebox with regular paper glue. The final step is to cover the whole thing with contact paper to make it more durable (I took the photos before that stage).   Aarrelaatikko numero 6. Jos laskin oikein. Aiheena taas timanttikuviot.

Toilet Roll Flower Wall Art | Recycle DIY

Image
I stumbled upon this toilet roll flower wall art idea on youtube last autumn and started collecting empty toilet and kitchen paper rolls for it. I finally made the flower this summer and it's been hanging on our summer cottage wall since July. I cut up empty toilet rolls into 4 parts and glued them into a flower shape with water diluted general glue and used plastic clothes pegs to keep the glued surfaces together while drying. After the flower had dried, I spray painted it pink with a couple of coats. The end result looks kind of like a dahlia. I hanged it on the wall using 3 small nails so it doesn't tilt one way or the other. Liima sai ku...

New Life of Spruce Wreath with Pink Paint

Image
The spruce wreath I made at the end of May had lost its color and shed a lot of its needles by July. I bought it extra time by fixing the position of the cones with iron wire and spray painting the whole wreath pink. I used the paint outside, but the smell was still horrible and long-lasting. Next time I may need to use a mask. I left the wreath dry out in the balcony over night before hanging it back on the door. The wreath is still left with a few bald spots I'll need to attend to.

Paint Chip Collage | Wall Art DIY

Image
I found an old color chart from the summer cottage to use as crafting material. I looked for ideas from Pinterest ( paint chip ) and ended up making wall art using the diamond shapes again. I cut out the paint chips and cut them and some magazine pictures into diamond shapes. The base is white packaging cardboard that I cut a suitable piece out of to fit in an A4 frame. I glued the diamonds and triangles on the cardboard using water diluted wood glue. Finally I wiped/scraped off the dried glue from the surface so the finished piece wouldn't look messy. Taulun tausta on valkoista pakkauspahvia, josta leikkasin A4-kehyksiin sopivan palan. Liimasin timantit ja kolmiot pahviin vedellä laimennetulla puulii...

Twig Heart Wreath | Risusydänkranssi

Image
I made another twig heart for the summer cottage. I found the idea for this curly heart from a Finnish crafts magazine, but made a simpler, narrower version vs. the weaved heart they did. The wreath ended up on the front door at the summer cottage. I used birch twigs, iron wire, secateurs and cutters. If you want to see how I made the wreath, there's a video below.

Desk Drawer Organization DIY

Image
I found this tutorial on Pinterest: recycling old cereal boxes into drawer dividers . I used transparent plastic boxes (from cherry tomatoes etc.) before, but the covered cereal boxes looked so cute I had to upgrade. And I finally have a good way of storing my washi tapes!

How to Recycle Yogurt Containers into Flower Pots

Image
I saw a tutorial in a Finnish crafts magazine ( Ihana ) on how to recycle old one liter yogurt buckets or containers into flower pots. They used fabric for covering the containers, but I opted for paper and the same diamond/rhombus shapes as for this box . I cut out more diamond shapes from magazine pictures and painted the containers with 4 coats of white acrylic paint. The result is not opaque and I found a better tip later on: you can remove a lot of the print on the containers with nail polish remover. I tried it and it works. You can use decoupage glue varnish for the gluing and finishing, but I just used water diluted glue this time. The process is a bit messy, but I like the finished flower pots.   If you want to watch how I made the flower pots, there's a video below or here .

Spruce Wreath | Kuusikranssi

Image
I found instructions for a beautiful spruce shaped wreath from a Finnish craft book. I made the wreath at the summer cottage, but brought it home to replace the Easter wreath finally. The basis of the wreath is made of willow branches and the "branches" are made of pine, spruce, juniper, calluna, blueberry, lingonberry and birch twigs. Finally I added a few cones. I used cutters, iron wire and secateurs to put the wreath together. The blueberry leaves dried up in a couple of days so it's best not to use them. And the needles started falling off in less than a week so you shouldn't touch wreath much after it's finished.  Luonto Sisustaa -kirjasta (kirj.

Russian Doll and Peacock Feathers | Fabric Painting

Image
More illustrated tote bags! I painted peacock feathers and a matryoshka doll on a black tote bag I had sewn myself. I sketched the image with a white colored pencil and then painted over it using red and white fabric paint and a paint brush. After that the procedure is the same as with this fabric print : let it dry for 24 hours, iron it and wash it. I made this bag in 2011 and it got a lot of use as a beach bag in Egypt that summer.

Elephants in a Bag | Fabric Printing

Image
I decorated another tote bag. I sewed the bag myself quite a while ago and painted the elephants one day last autumn while listening to one of Henning Mankell's Wallander audio books. I was having a break from work/study for a few days and my way to unwind was to go pick mushrooms and do crafty things like this fabric printing project. Tässä taas yksi kuvitettu kangaskassi. Ompelin kassin itse muutama vuosi sitten ja maalasin siihen norsuja eräänä päivänä viime syksynä, kuunnellen yhtä Henning Mankellin Wallanderia äänikirjana. Pidin muutaman päivän taukoa töistä/opinnoista ja rentouduin sienestämällä ja esim. tällä kankaanpainantaprojektilla.

Diamond Collage Box Decoration and Card

Image
I decorated yet another box. This is one where I keep some of my paints and other art supplies. The box was originally silver color and I covered it by making a collage of diamond (or rhombus) shaped magazine cut-outs. I drew a shape I liked on grid paper, cut it out (if you fold the paper first and then cut, you can make it more symmetric) and used it to make a more durable model on cardboard. You can download and print out my diamond template right here , if you prefer. And then I used the model to cut out diamonds from magazine pictures I liked. I glued them on the box, leaving small margins between the diamonds and finally covered the whole thing with contact paper. Piirsin haluamani muodon ensin ruutupaperille, leikkasin...
