The beginning of the trend seems to be The Reverse Coloring book by Kendra Norton  (affiliate link).  The coloring pages of a reverse coloring book are usually more or less abstract watercolor paintings. So the coloring page already has the colors and you draw the lines. If you want to color on the go, you could only bring the coloring book and one pen for drawing the lines. But you could also use a variety of supplies. Different sizes of pens and markers for varying line thicknesses. Different colors of supplies. Paint markers. It's been a while since I've done some mindfulness crafting by cutting up old magazines. I just find it so relaxing to to flip through old magazines, find pictures and pages I like and cut shapes out of them. I have a box full of handmade envelopes I've made of old magazine pages, but I thought it would be fun to actually draw an envelope design. And since it's a black and white line art of tribal patterns, it doubles as a coloring page for kids and grown-ups. Both freebies are available for download and print here . Bengali Princess watercolor painting wall art inspired by Indian culture. Sketchbook art and filming your sketchbook has been popular for a while. Have you seen MyPetiteCake's Sketchbook Tour ? I wanted to make a similar video, but my own sketchbooks are not much to look at. I use sketchbooks for getting ideas down on paper. So there's some text and quick, ugly drawings. However, I do have a lot of finished artworks. And fair enough, there are "My Artwork Collection" videos around too, so I made one of those instead. Or two. I liked the idea of flipping through a sketchbook and tried to mimic that. I had the camera pointed down towards my desk (see blog post about my camera set-up ) and moved each artwork from the right side into the shot and out to the left. Tulip Flower Bouquet. Watercolor on 250 gsm watercolor paper, A4 size. February 2016. We were given small flower bouquets at work last week for Valentine's Day and I decided to paint mine. It's nice to sometimes draw and paint from life rather than from a photo. I planned out the composition and colors in my sketchbook first and then sketched the shapes and flower details in actual size with a colored pencil on drawing paper. I drew out the final lines in pencil on top of the colored pencil sketch (that way the correct lines are easily seen, but I didn't have to erase anything). Then I transferred the drawing on watercolor paper using graphite transfer paper . I actually lost my A4 sized graphite transfer papers, which I'm really annoyed about, but luckily the small A5 size sample paper still works fine. A couple of months before my last birthday, I decided I wanted to start making speed painting videos for You T ube and asked for a tripod for my birthday. My first videos turned out to be travel diaries, because those were a lot easier to film. By now I've also made some DIY tutorial and speed art videos and I thought I'd share how I got started with those by using tools I already had or just cheap or free tools. Why should you start a You T ube channel though, if you already run a craft or art blog? For one thing, it can be a lot more informative to watch video of an art technique or a craft project than just reading and seeing a few work-in-progress photos. Moreover, you can reach a bigger audience with videos than a written blog. As you may know, my favorite kind of storage boxes are old shoeboxes . I use them especially to store letters, cards, envelopes and art and craft supplies. Decorating them with magazine pages, used wrapping paper, book pages, decorative cardboard (Lidl's facial tissue boxes!), used stamps and old entrance tickets etc. makes them pretty and personal (and they're free , because recycling old materials) . The newest boxes I've covered using a collage technique. I cut out symmetric diamonds (rhombus shape), preferably several of each color/pattern and arrange them to cover the whole box. Cutting and gluing all the pieces takes a while, but I like the result. A shortcut is to cover a few sides with the diamonds and just glue whole magazine pages on the rest of them. Finally I cover the decorative storage box with contact paper so it's fine to wipe off any dust etc. without ruining the paper collage. I made a Matryoshka doll birthday card for my niece's 5th birthday. The base is pre-cut pink card stock. I used my old matryoshka doll templates (ones I made for bookmarks and fridge magnets ) to cut out the top and bottom half of the doll from magazine pages and the face from beige copy paper (looks yellow in the photos). I also cut out the number 5 from a sparkly magazine picture. I used a paper punch to make some flower shapes and glued everything on the card base. I wanted to cut cut pretty borders for the whole card, but I had forgotten how dull my decorative border scissors are and only cut one side.  I used a black fineliner, colorful Stabilo fineliners and colored pencils to draw the doll's face and make up. White gel pen is good for bringing out the white parts in the eyes. Finally I wrote a birthday wish inside with a calligraphy pen (ZIG, Kuretake). These Spring flower sugar watercolor paintings turned out pretty nice (some of them anyway) so I decided to make them again with a Christmas theme this time. I, again, painted them with my 4-year-old-niece. For colors we used red, green and blue watercolor with some dots of gold acrylic paint to add a bit of festive sparkle. The paintings are postcard size and could be used as Christmas cards or framed Christmas art decorations. Sugar painting doesn't require any special painting skills, so you can do it with children. I made my first printable coloring book in July with ethnic themes (African and Indian Portraits and Patterns) . This time I wanted to make one of Matryoshka dolls, which I love drawing. There's 5 designs and they're all ones I had originally drawn a few years ago, but I fixed them up and added more details. The originals are A4 size ink and marker drawings which I scanned and edited in GIMP (turned black and white, added contrast, erased mistakes), put into a word file and saved as a PDF. Decorated box number 6. If I counted right. And it's another diamond collage. I've now used that style for boxes, cards , flower pots and a painting . I made this one while having a flu (and the last one while having chickenpox...). It's not the fastest way to cover a box so it's good for times when you can't leave the house for a couple of days. The materials I used for this were essentially trash: an old shoebox, magazine pictures, paint chips and an empty tissue box (with a nice print on it). I cut out diamond shapes of pictures I liked using a stencil I drew before and glued them on the shoebox with regular paper glue. I've been making a coloring book for adults this week. When I decided to make one, it was pretty clear I wanted the theme to be Indian and African portraits and I wanted it to have a lot of intricate patterns related to those cultures. (I have other themes in mind too, but I'm starting with this one.) The starting point for the pages was my previous paintings. I usually make a sketch for each painting on grid paper in pencil and enforce the final outlines with pen before transferring them on watercolor paper or canvas ( with baking paper or graphite transfer pape r ). I decorated yet another box. This is one where I keep some of my paints and other art supplies. The box was originally silver color and I covered it by making a collage of diamond (or rhombus) shaped magazine cut-outs. I drew a shape I liked on grid paper, cut it out (if you fold the paper first and then cut, you can make it more symmetric) and used it to make a more durable model on cardboard. You can download and print out my diamond template right here , if you prefer. And then I used the model to cut out diamonds from magazine pictures I liked. Sain pahan flunssan viime viikolla ja käytin muutaman illan joulukorttien askarteluun. Kirjekavereiden kortit olin postittanut jo aiemmin (niistä kuvia ensi viikolla).
