Coloring Is Not Just for Kids
Coloring helps some people relax and relieve stress. Coloring can even be a therapeutic experience. Art can be a good way to focus on something completely and forget everything else, but some people fear the blank page. If you're one of those people, you might find coloring inside the lines more enjoyable and relaxing. Coloring Tips
If you print these coloring pages on normal printer paper, I recommend coloring with colored pencils, pastels or some other dry medium. Markers might bleed through the page. However, if you want to use the outlines for a watercolor painting etc., you can also transfer them onto thicker paper, such as watercolor paper. Here's a blog post on different ways to trace and transfer an outline sketch. Or you can try printing directly onto thicker paper.
My pastel coloring materials are Derwent pastel pencils and Koh-i-Noor Toison Toison D´or soft pastels. I first make a little color comp in sketchbook to plan out the colors I'd use. I like coloring with pastels, because they are easier to blend and have a better color pay-off than the colored pencils I have. I use pastel pencils for the face (I have a pastel pencil set specifically for skin tones) and hair and soft pastels for the larger, solid color areas. I leave white areas to create shine. Watch this video to see how I color skin and blend with pastel pencils. Pastels are messy so I start at the middle of the paper and work outwards, turning the paper when necessary, to not smudge the parts I already colored. I use a cotton swab for blending.
How To Make Coloring Pages
I turn my sketches for paintings into coloring pages. I transfer the hand drawn sketches onto a new paper to get clean graphite outlines. Then I ink it with a black pen or a marker. I've also tried a dip pen and acrylic ink for inking, but the lines turn out pretty thick. I fix mistakes with correction fluid or white ink. Then I scan the drawing in 300 dpi (this is the resolution you need for printing in A4 size.I edit the scan in GIMP (it's a free image editor). I turn the scan into a black and white or grey scale image, adjust the levels or contrast, and sharpness. Then I erase little errors and dust particles from the scanner. To clean bigger areas, I just select and cut them. I save the image in JPG or PNG format and add it into a MS Word document with small margins and save as a PDF.
