White Beaches and Parasols | Alcudia, Mallorca

Image
And finally I'll end this Mallorca series with photos from Alcudia and bus trips around Mallorca. (I've been writing Alducia all the time, but it's pronounced Alcúdia, stress on the cu.) Our hotel was in Alcudia and that's were we spent most of the week. Alcudia is a beach resort so perhaps not the most interesting place in Mallorca. But taking trips around the island you can have a more eventful vacation. Palma is definitely worth visiting. And on the road between Palma and Alcudia, you can see beautiful landscapes: farms, orange trees, poppy fields, horses, sheep... Mallorca -postaukset päättyvät Alcudiaan ja kuviin bussimatkoilta saaren läpi. (Olen muuten koko ajan kirjoittanut Alcudia, mutta Alcúdia kuvaa sanan ääntämystä paremmin. Paino on toisella tavulla.) Hotellimme sijaitsi Alcudiassa ja vietimme siellä suurimman osan viikosta. Alcudia on rantalomakohde, eikä siis ehkä Mallorcan kiinnostavin paikka. Reissailemalla ympäri saarta saa kuitenkin tapahtuma...

Alcudia Old Town | Mallorca

Image
Old town Alcudia, Mallorca. / Alcudian vanha kaupunki Mallorcalla. We visited the Sunday market in the old town of Alcudia (the market is also held on Tuesdays). Old town was a 30 minute walk from our hotel (Alcudia Beach), but you can also use a mini tourist train to move around Alcudia. The marketplace was very crowded, but there were also quiet, little alleys inside the old town walls. Clothes, jewellery and bags are some of the things that were sold in the marketplace. We also went to a little handicraft shop and bought an owl decoration. And we dropped in at a church in old town and a cemetery on the way. Markkinoilla myyti...

Bike Ride to Port de Pollença | Mallorca

Image
The Ironman triathlon was held in Alcudia, Mallorca at the time of our trip and there were a lot of cyclists around. We, too, rented bikes from the hotel one day and took a bike ride to the beautiful Port de Pollença. (They only lent bikes, not helmets.) So here are views from the road and from the harbor of Pollença. By the way, when going on a bike trip in Mallorca, remember to reapply sunscreen every once in a while. I managed to burn the backs of my hands and my shoulders on this cycling trip.

S'Albufera Natural Park | Mallorca

Image
S'Albufera natural park in Alcudia, Mallorca. / S'Albuferan luonnonpuisto Alcudiassa, Mallorcassa. Quack, quack! We took a little walk one afternoon from the hotel to the natural park of s'Albufera in Playa de Muro, Alcudia. The walk there and back (+ the little lap we did at the park) turned out to be 14 km. Oops. The park closed already at 6 pm and we were in a bit of a hurry to run out of there before the gates were locked.  What I remember from s'Albufera was the high reeds. Really high. 4-5 m high. We did see a few birds from the bird watching booths (what are they really called?), but mostly we just heard Donald Duck noises from the bed of reeds. We did spot Upupa epops , though (the hoopoe, no picture, I had just written down the funny name in my notes). Kaislikossa suhisee. Tai kvaakkuu... Teimme eräänä iltapäivänä pienen kävelylenkin hotellista Alcudian Playa de Murossa sijaitsevaan s'Albuferan luonnonpuistoon. Matkaa sinne ja takaisin (+ luonnonpu...

Majorica Pearls and Stalactite Caves | Mallorca

Image
Stalactite cave / Tippukiviluola As mentioned before , we had an organized day trip to the east side of Mallorca on our vacation. The trip included a visit to the Majorica Pearls factory in Manacor. The pearls are made by melting glass and they're dyed with silver dye gotten from fish scales, for example. Kuten aiemmin mainitsin, kävimme Mallorcan matkalla järjestetyllä retkellä saaren itäosassa. Retki alkoi vierailulla helmitehtaassa Manacorissa. Majorica-helmet tehdään sulatetusta lasista ja värjätään esimerkiksi kalansuomuilla.

Mallorcan Ceramics in Manacor

Image
The next thing I have to show you from Mallorca is this aborable ceramics store in Manacor, in the east side of Mallorca. The visit was part of an organized trip and the guide called this a "junk store". But I thought these colorful pieces were really cute.

Image
La Seu Now that the Madeira posts are done, I'll continue these "travel Mondays" with Mallorca (or Majorca). So these photos are from last May. Our hotel was in Alcudia, which is a beach resort. But we had a one day trip to the capital, Palma. It was an unorganized trip, we just took the bus from Alcudia to Palma (it cost 6 euros). The bus ride took about an hour. It happened to be a cloudier, a bit colder day, so it was very fitting for wandering around the city.

Mallorca Cards and Stamps

Image
I sent a few cards from my Mallorca trip. I was impressed by the view stamps since I've gotten the impression that it's difficult to get nice stamps in Spain. These international stamps have pictures of La Seu cathedral, the Palma to Soller train (I assume) and some beautiful harbor cities, for example. One international stamp cost 85 cents, by the way. Postcards were only 20 cents per piece.

Cactus Seeds from Mallorca

Image
I was in Mallorca for a week earlier this month and since I've been getting interested in growing plants again, I wanted to buy some seeds from the trip. A lot of the gardens in Alcudia had cactuses in them and I figured that's the easiest thing for me to try, they're not likely to die even if I forget to water them at times. And they should work fine as houseplants. The two photos above are from some wasteland, not anyone's garden. I got packs of 10 cactus seeds and 5 aloe vera seeds, 2.50 euros each. When I got home, I soaked the seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing. Then I sowed them in pots in a soil/sand mix about 0.5 cm deep, watered and added plastic covers with holes to keep them damp and warm during germination. I also sowed some orange seeds and an apricot seed at the same time. I had soaked those seeds before sowing, too. For the orange seeds I was going to use all clay pots but I only found one so the rest of them are plastic. In the bottom o...
