Palmitos Park | Gran Canaria

Image
If Puerto de Mogán was the most beautiful place in Gran Canaria , then Palmitos Park was my favorite thing about the trip. The park has both animals and plants. There are parrot, dolphin, birds of prey and exotic birds shows, orchid and butterfly houses and a cactus garden. I also enjoyed the bird cage that you can go into and walk amongst the birds. I have a video clip of that and the shows I mentioned, it's at the bottom of the post. I filmed a stork couple trying to build a nest, for example. One of them got 3 sticks in his beak and dropped them. Then he got them to the tree and dropped them to the ground again. Making a stork nest is pretty difficult. In the birds of prey and exotic bird shows, the birds were flying free. The eagles actually flew so far behind the mountains you couldn't see them anymore. But they came back some minutes later. It seemed like a pretty unconventional "zoo" to me and made you feel like they really treat the animals well. Jos Pu...

Las Palmas | Gran Canaria

Image
View over Las Palmas from Saint Anna Cathedral. One morning we took a bus to the capital of Gran Canaria (or one of the two capitals of the Canary Islands): Las Palmas. You could go round the city with a sightseeing bus, but we decided to just walk around. We began and ended our walk at the San Telmo bus station (where the toilet doors don't close, by the way). Our route went through the Triana shopping street, Vegueta area with a lot of colorful houses close to each other and the promenade.

Image
One of the places I absolutely wanted to see in Gran Canaria was Puerto de Mogán. It's called Little Venice because of the canals. The white houses with colorful borders and little alleys with flowering trees were the most beautiful view of the whole trip. Yksi paikka, jonka halusin ehdottomasti nähdä Gran Canarialla , oli Puerto de Mogán. Sitä kutsutaan pikku-Venetsiaksi kanaaliensa vuoksi. Valkoiset, värikäsreunaiset talot ja kukkivien puiden reunustamat pikkukujat olivat koko matkan kaunein näky.

Arguineguín | Gran Canaria

Image
Sunwing hotel in Arguineguín, Gran Canaria. / Sunwing-hotelli, Arguineguín, Gran Canaria. I was in Gran Canaria for a week in the beginning of May. We were staying in Arguineguín in the south of Gran Canaria, but also visited Las Palmas , Palmitos Park in Maspalomas and Puerto de Mogán . I'll divide each of those places into their own posts. We also wanted to go hiking, for example in Roque Nublo area and on the sand dunes in Maspalomas, but this trip didn't go exactly as planned... Olin toukokuun alussa viikon matkalla Gran Canarialla .

White Beaches and Parasols | Alcudia, Mallorca

Image
And finally I'll end this Mallorca series with photos from Alcudia and bus trips around Mallorca. (I've been writing Alducia all the time, but it's pronounced Alcúdia, stress on the cu.) Our hotel was in Alcudia and that's were we spent most of the week. Alcudia is a beach resort so perhaps not the most interesting place in Mallorca. But taking trips around the island you can have a more eventful vacation. Palma is definitely worth visiting. And on the road between Palma and Alcudia, you can see beautiful landscapes: farms, orange trees, poppy fields, horses, sheep... Mallorca -postaukset päättyvät Alcudiaan ja kuviin bussimatkoilta saaren läpi. (Olen muuten koko ajan kirjoittanut Alcudia, mutta Alcúdia kuvaa sanan ääntämystä paremmin. Paino on toisella tavulla.) Hotellimme sijaitsi Alcudiassa ja vietimme siellä suurimman osan viikosta. Alcudia on rantalomakohde, eikä siis ehkä Mallorcan kiinnostavin paikka. Reissailemalla ympäri saarta saa kuitenkin tapahtuma...

Alcudia Old Town | Mallorca

Image
Old town Alcudia, Mallorca. / Alcudian vanha kaupunki Mallorcalla. We visited the Sunday market in the old town of Alcudia (the market is also held on Tuesdays). Old town was a 30 minute walk from our hotel (Alcudia Beach), but you can also use a mini tourist train to move around Alcudia. The marketplace was very crowded, but there were also quiet, little alleys inside the old town walls. Clothes, jewellery and bags are some of the things that were sold in the marketplace. We also went to a little handicraft shop and bought an owl decoration. And we dropped in at a church in old town and a cemetery on the way. Markkinoilla myyti...

Bike Ride to Port de Pollença | Mallorca

Image
The Ironman triathlon was held in Alcudia, Mallorca at the time of our trip and there were a lot of cyclists around. We, too, rented bikes from the hotel one day and took a bike ride to the beautiful Port de Pollença. (They only lent bikes, not helmets.) So here are views from the road and from the harbor of Pollença. By the way, when going on a bike trip in Mallorca, remember to reapply sunscreen every once in a while. I managed to burn the backs of my hands and my shoulders on this cycling trip.

S'Albufera Natural Park | Mallorca

Image
S'Albufera natural park in Alcudia, Mallorca. / S'Albuferan luonnonpuisto Alcudiassa, Mallorcassa. Quack, quack! We took a little walk one afternoon from the hotel to the natural park of s'Albufera in Playa de Muro, Alcudia. The walk there and back (+ the little lap we did at the park) turned out to be 14 km. Oops. The park closed already at 6 pm and we were in a bit of a hurry to run out of there before the gates were locked.  What I remember from s'Albufera was the high reeds. Really high. 4-5 m high. We did see a few birds from the bird watching booths (what are they really called?), but mostly we just heard Donald Duck noises from the bed of reeds. We did spot Upupa epops , though (the hoopoe, no picture, I had just written down the funny name in my notes). Kaislikossa suhisee. Tai kvaakkuu... Teimme eräänä iltapäivänä pienen kävelylenkin hotellista Alcudian Playa de Murossa sijaitsevaan s'Albuferan luonnonpuistoon. Matkaa sinne ja takaisin (+ luonnonpu...

Majorica Pearls and Stalactite Caves | Mallorca

Image
Stalactite cave / Tippukiviluola As mentioned before , we had an organized day trip to the east side of Mallorca on our vacation. The trip included a visit to the Majorica Pearls factory in Manacor. The pearls are made by melting glass and they're dyed with silver dye gotten from fish scales, for example. Kuten aiemmin mainitsin, kävimme Mallorcan matkalla järjestetyllä retkellä saaren itäosassa. Retki alkoi vierailulla helmitehtaassa Manacorissa. Majorica-helmet tehdään sulatetusta lasista ja värjätään esimerkiksi kalansuomuilla.

Mallorcan Ceramics in Manacor

Image
The next thing I have to show you from Mallorca is this aborable ceramics store in Manacor, in the east side of Mallorca. The visit was part of an organized trip and the guide called this a "junk store". But I thought these colorful pieces were really cute.

Image
La Seu Now that the Madeira posts are done, I'll continue these "travel Mondays" with Mallorca (or Majorca). So these photos are from last May. Our hotel was in Alcudia, which is a beach resort. But we had a one day trip to the capital, Palma. It was an unorganized trip, we just took the bus from Alcudia to Palma (it cost 6 euros). The bus ride took about an hour. It happened to be a cloudier, a bit colder day, so it was very fitting for wandering around the city.

Center of Funchal | Madeira

Image
Mercado dos Lavradores We're finally at the last Madeira post. We made a second visit to the center of the capital, Funchal . The center is only 2 km away from the hotel area of Lido. We took a bus trip there straight from the hotel area, but came back walking. In the center we wandered around the harbor, old town , shops and gardens. Nyt on päästy viimeiseen Madeira -postaukseen. Kävimme Madeiran matkan aikana vielä toistamiseen pääkaupungin, Funchalin keskustassa. Parin kilometrin matka Lidon alueelta keskustaan taittui suoraan hotellin pihalta lähtevällä bussilla. Takaisin tulimme kävellen. Kiertelimme keskustassa satamassa, vanhassa kaupungissa , kaupoissa ja puutarhoissa.

Lido, Funchal | Madeira

Image
This post contains random photos from around Lido, Funchal, where we stayed on our Madeira trip. Buildings, street views, gardens and cats. The first photos are of a flower shop in the hotel area.  Tässä postauksessa on sekalaisia kuvia Funchalin Lidosta, jossa oleskelimme Madeiran matkalla: rakennuksia, katunäkymiä, puutarhoja ja kissoja. Ensimmäiset kuvat ovat ihanasta kukkakaupasta hotellialueella.

Azinhaga da Palmeira Levada | Madeira

Image
Our hotel in Madeira was situated in the hotel area of Lido. The closest levada route was just up the hill. Besides seeing the sea view, we also got to peak into Madeiran gardens. The route is called Azinhaga da Palmeira. Hotellimme Madeiran matkalla sijaitsi Lidon hotellialueella. Lähin levadareitti lähti hotellialueen yläpuolisesta rinteestä. Merimaiseman lisäksi saimme kurkistella madeiralaisten pihoille. Reitin nimi on Azinhaga da Palmeira.

Madeira Botanical Garden

Image
The Funchal city tour of our Madeira trip continued with a visit to the Botanical Garden. So be prepared for a lot of beautiful garden and cute bird photos. The garden is located high up the mountain. You can see the little houses on the hillside and the sea below in a couple of photos. Madeiran matkan Funchalin kaupunkikierros jatkui vierailulla kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa.

Monte - Funchal Cable Car | Madeira

Image
And the Madeira posts continue for a change. This time I have some aerial photos of the capital of Madeira: Funchal. In the beginning of the trip, we took a city tour of Funchal. The bus drove up a steep hill via a narrow, crooked road to Monte. And after that experience, I can say that I'd never drive a car in Madeira myself. Below you see some photos of a garden, which we didn't actually visit, in Monte. Madeira-postaukset jatkuvat taas vaihteeksi. Tällä kertaa on luvassa ilmakuvia pääkaupungista, Funchalista. Loman alussa kävimme kaupunkikierroksella. Bussi ajoi ylös jyrkkää rinnettä mutkittelevaa, kapeaa tietä pitkin. Voin sanoa, etten itse ajaisi Madeiralla mistään hinnasta... Alla kuvia Monten puutarhasta, jossa emme kuitenkaan käyneet.

Santo da Serra | Madeira

Image
I'm continuing my Madeira posts after a looong time since I'd like to be done with them before going on to the Mallorca posts. This one is about an organized levada trip of Vale Paraíso (Levada da Serra) and a visit to the Santo da Serra marketplace afterwards. It's been so long that I certainly don't have my Madeira trip fresh in my mind but I'm going by old sent emails, a trip diary and sent postcards (I always take photos of the backs of sent postcards to be able to remember what I wrote).  Madeira-postaukset jatkuvat pitkän tauon jälkeen. Tällä kertaa on luvassa kuvia matkatoimiston järjestämältä Vale Paraíso / Levada da Serra -retkeltä ja käynniltä Santo da Serran sunnuntaimarkkinoilla.

Madeira Street Art

Image
Dreamscapes, hundreds of old keys... I showed some art doors from Madeira before but as I wrote then, I have about 100 of those photos, so now I'll show some more. Here are some of the interesting and inventive (or just pretty and colorful) doors and walls from Old Town Funchal, Madeira:  Unikuvia, satoja vanhoja avaimia...

Mallorca Cards and Stamps

Image
I sent a few cards from my Mallorca trip. I was impressed by the view stamps since I've gotten the impression that it's difficult to get nice stamps in Spain. These international stamps have pictures of La Seu cathedral, the Palma to Soller train (I assume) and some beautiful harbor cities, for example. One international stamp cost 85 cents, by the way. Postcards were only 20 cents per piece.

Cactus Seeds from Mallorca

Image
I was in Mallorca for a week earlier this month and since I've been getting interested in growing plants again, I wanted to buy some seeds from the trip. A lot of the gardens in Alcudia had cactuses in them and I figured that's the easiest thing for me to try, they're not likely to die even if I forget to water them at times. And they should work fine as houseplants. The two photos above are from some wasteland, not anyone's garden. I got packs of 10 cactus seeds and 5 aloe vera seeds, 2.50 euros each. When I got home, I soaked the seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing. Then I sowed them in pots in a soil/sand mix about 0.5 cm deep, watered and added plastic covers with holes to keep them damp and warm during germination. I also sowed some orange seeds and an apricot seed at the same time. I had soaked those seeds before sowing, too. For the orange seeds I was going to use all clay pots but I only found one so the rest of them are plastic. In the bottom o...
