Vuoden viimeinen mökkikerta taitaa olla käytynä. Ehdimme viime viikonloppuna vielä metsään ennen hirvestyskauden käynnistymistä, toisin kuin viime vuonna . Metsäreissuilta saatiin saaliiksi sekä marjoja, sieniä että siemeniä. Puolukkakausi taisi olla parhaimmillaan, mutta suurin osa karpaloista oli vielä raakoja. Sienistä lähinnä voitatteja löytyi hyvin ja lisäksi muutama viimeinen kantarelli ja vaaleaorakas. Kerään mökille aina matkalta kukkia maljakkoon ja viimekertaisten kukkien siemenet päätyivät kukkapenkkiin. Toivottavasti varsinkin helokin siemenet itäisivät. August's been a busy month, because I got a new job. But I did manage to edit a few videos and I want to share them here too. When I started making videos in May, I decided I wanted a video of how our garden changes throughout the summer. So I filmed little clips in May, June, July and August and put them all together today. Besides flowers I also filmed birds, squirrels and insects in the garden. I did see a hedgehog in our garden too in the beginning of the summer, but didn't catch it on film.  Elokuu on ollut aika kiireinen, koska aloitin uuden työn. Ehdin kuitenkin editoida muutaman videon. Kun aloitin videoiden kuvaamisen toukokuussa, päätin kuvata puutarhaa koko kesän ajan (toukokuusta elokuuhun) ja koostaa pätkistä yhden videon, jossa näkyy miten puutarha muuttuu kesän aikana. Kuvasin kukkien lisäksi lintuja, oravia ja hyönteisiä. Alkukesästä näin pihalla siilinkin, mutten saanut sitä kuvattua.

Sälgkulla, Sipoo Kävin tänä kesänä ensimmäistä kertaa katsomassa avoimia puutarhoja puutarhapäivänä (28. kesäkuuta). Ehdimme päivän aikana käydä Tuusulassa Rudus Formento kivipihanäyttelyssä, Koiramäen Pajutallissa (joka ei tosin kuulunut puutarhapäivään, mutta oli joka tapauksessa auki), Majamäessä ja Purorinteen puutarhassa sekä Sipoossa Sälgkullan puutarhassa. Mielenkiintoisin paikka oli Sälgkulla, jossa oli katseltavaa suuren inspiroivan puutarhan lisäksi pikkumuseoissa sekä käsityöpuodissa. Paikassa pidetään myös betonityökursseja. Betonisia koristeita löytyikin pitkin puutarhaa. En ottanut päivän aikana juurikaan valokuvia, vaan videokuvaa .  I went to see open gardens for the first time on Garden Day this year (June 28). I didn't take many photos, but filmed a video instead. The most interesting place was called Sälgkulla where the garden was full of concrete decorations.

I spent Midsummer at the summer cottage this year. The weather was quite rainy so I did a lot of painting and drawing inside with my niece. But during the 3 days we also went to the sauna and "swam" a lot (more like dipping in the water, it was still quite cold in June) and went rowing a bit too. On Midsummer's Eve we went to a summer market and to see some sheep and chickens in Joutsa . In the evening we couldn't find the bonfire. We only heard the fire trucks later. (Ok, they didn't actually go to the bonfire.) So we went to see a duckboard path in a beautiful swamp area by Valklampi instead. I shot some swamp views and other Midsummer moments on video . I wanted to immortalize one sunny Saturday in the middle of May. And this time, instead of taking a lot of photos, I took some video clips. The Ironman triathlon was held in Alcudia, Mallorca at the time of our trip and there were a lot of cyclists around. We, too, rented bikes from the hotel one day and took a bike ride to the beautiful Port de Pollença. (They only lent bikes, not helmets.) So here are views from the road and from the harbor of Pollença. By the way, when going on a bike trip in Mallorca, remember to reapply sunscreen every once in a while. I managed to burn the backs of my hands and my shoulders on this cycling trip. Alcudiassa, Mallorcalla oli matkamme aikaan Ironman triathlon -kisat ja pyöräilijöitä kyllä riitti. Mekin teimme yhden pyörälenkin kauniiseen Pollençaan, kun hotellilta sai vuokrata pyörät (mutta ei pöyräilykypäriä, respan työntekijän mukaan niitä ei tarvittu...). Tässä siis maisemia rantatieltä ja Pollençan satamasta. Jos pyöräilet Mallorcalla, kannattaa muuten lisäillä aurinkorasvaa aina välillä. Onnistuin polttamaan kämmenselät ja olkapäät tällä pyöräreissulla.

We took a little walk one afternoon from the hotel to the natural park of s'Albufera in Playa de Muro, Alcudia. The walk there and back (+ the little lap we did at the park) turned out to be 14 km. Oops. The park closed already at 6 pm and we were in a bit of a hurry to run out of there before the gates were locked.  What I remember from s'Albufera was the high reeds. Really high. 4-5 m high. We did see a few birds from the bird watching booths (what are they really called?), but mostly we just heard Donald Duck noises from the bed of reeds. We did spot Upupa epops , though (the hoopoe, no picture, I had just written down the funny name in my notes). Kaislikossa suhisee. Tai kvaakkuu... Mercado dos Lavradores We're finally at the last Madeira post. We made a second visit to the center of the capital, Funchal . The center is only 2 km away from the hotel area of Lido. We took a bus trip there straight from the hotel area, but came back walking. In the center we wandered around the harbor, old town , shops and gardens. Nyt on päästy viimeiseen Madeira -postaukseen. Kävimme Madeiran matkan aikana vielä toistamiseen pääkaupungin, Funchalin keskustassa. Parin kilometrin matka Lidon alueelta keskustaan taittui suoraan hotellin pihalta lähtevällä bussilla. Takaisin tulimme kävellen. Kiertelimme keskustassa satamassa, vanhassa kaupungissa , kaupoissa ja puutarhoissa.

The Funchal city tour of our Madeira trip continued with a visit to the Botanical Garden. So be prepared for a lot of beautiful garden and cute bird photos. The garden is located high up the mountain.You can see the little houses on the hillside and the sea below in a couple of photos. Madeiran matkan Funchalin kaupunkikierros jatkui vierailulla kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa. Luvassa on siis paljon kuvia kauniista puutarhasta ja söpöistä linnuista. Puutarha sijaitsee korkealla rinteessä ja muutamassa kuvassa vilahtaa taustalla myös taloja ja merta.

Tämän joulun sää on ollut kyllä täydellinen. Olen ihaillut hohtavaa hankea aamulenkeillä koiran kanssa ja käynyt siskon lasten kanssa pulkkamäessä joka päivä. -15°C pakkasetkaan eivät ole haitanneet, olen palannut pulkkamäestä aina hikisenä.  The weather has been perfect this Christmas. Just until a few days before Christmas it was gray and rainy but then the snow landed and hasn't left since (probably will soon though). I've loved taking out the dog in the mornings in the glittering snow. We've gone sliding in the snow everyday with my niece and nephew. Just a few garden and houseplant photos from the past 3 months.  Muutama kuva puutarhasta ja huonekasveista tältä syksyltä.  September Two months ago one (or actually two) of the poppies grown from the Mallorcan seeds finally decided to bloom. I also gathered bagfuls of wild flower seeds and sowed them in the backyard for next summer.   Kaksi kuukautta sitten yksi (tai oikeastaan kaksi) Mallorcalta tuoduista siemenistä kasvatetuista unikoista puhkesi haalean violettiin kukkaan. Keräsin myös pussikaupalla kukansiemeniä ja laitoin ne multaan takapihalle ensi kesää varten. 

Vaikka tänään on sateinen ja pimeä sunnuntai, eilen oli kaunis, aurinkoinen syyspäivä. Kävimme mökillä luultavasti viimeistä kertaa tänä vuonna. Valmistelimme mökkipaikan talvikuntoon ja kävimme karpaloretkellä suolla. Karpaloita kyllä löytyi, mutta niiden kerääminen jäätyneestä sammalikosta oli hidasta. Hirvestyskausi on käynnissä ja kuulimme päivän aikana muutamia laukauksia, mutta yhtäkään hirveä ei näkynyt. Viimeisimmillä mökkiretkillä on sen sijaan bongattu esimerkiksi kauris, kettu ja joutsenten kokous pellolla.

Yksi aamu viimeisimmällä (mutta ei vuoden viimeisellä, pitää päästä vielä suolle karpaloretkelle) mökkireissulla oli todella sumuinen. Vastarantaa erotti tuskin ollenkaan ja järvi on aika pieni, joten vastarannan puut ja rakennukset näkyvät yleensä aika hyvin. Näkymä oli sen verran outo, että piti ottaa vähän kuvia.  On the last trip to the summer cottage, one morning was really foggy. You could barely see the opposite shore. It was so strange I had to take some photos.

Kuvia viime lokakuulta karpaloiden poimimisesta suolla. Vaikka en pidäkään erityisesti karpaloiden mausta, niiden kerääminen suolla oli jotenkin eksoottinen kokemus. Verrattuna esimerkiksi mustikoiden keräämiseen metsässä, suolla on avoimempaa, pehmeämpää ja lisäksi oma tuoksunsa (joka on lähtöisin ehkä suopursusta?) . Mutta suolla liikkuessa kannattaa tietysti olla varovainen. Tänä kesänä lakkoja kerätessä jäin kiinni suohon kumisaappaistani ja minut piti vetää irti...  ♥ I just noticed how few blog posts I made last year... So the photos of this post are actually from last October. I went cranberry picking in the swamp for the first time (I also picked cloudberries in the swamp for the first time during that summer). I don't really like cranberries that much but I loved the berry picking atmosphere at the swamp. It's really different from picking blueberries in the forest, for example. Kaikki kaktukseni ovat viettäneet kesän joko ulkona puutarhassa tai parvekkeella pienessä kasvihuoneessa. Vain pari vanhaa kaktusta kuoli, mutta muut olivat selvästi tyytyväisiä kuumaan kesään. Kaikki ovat kasvaneet ja pari on jopa kukkinut. Viimeisten kuvien kaktuksen olen kasvattanut siemenistä (ruokakaupasta ostetusta hedelmästä, joka oli muistaakseni pitaija) noin viisi vuotta sitten ja se on kasvanut jo aika isoksi. Kaikki St. paulia -pistokkaat ovat tuottaneet uusia lehtiä ja appelsiinit ovat kasvaneet. ♥ I've kept all my (eight) cactuses either outside in the garden or on the balcony in a little greenhouse for the summer. A couple of old ones died but the others seem to have been very happy. Some have flowered and all have grown a lot. The cactus in the last photos is one that I've grown from seeds (that I got from a fruit from the grocery store, probably pitaya) maybe five years ago and it's gotten pretty big. Sain pari vuotta sitten hyönteishotellin arvontavoittona. Tässä päivitystä sen toiminnasta kuvien muodossa. Ensimmäinen kuva on otettu, kun sain hotellin ja loput kuvat on otettu viime kuussa. Asukkaita näyttää olevan, vaikka hotelli pitäisi varmasti siirtää parvekkeen nurkasta parempaan paikkaan. Hyönteishotellin voi rakentaa myös itse ja ohjeita löytyy esimerkiksi Youtubesta (varsinkin englanniksi, mutta myös suomeksi).  ♥ I wanted to show how the insect hotel I got (I won it from some lottery) a couple of years ago, has been working. The first photo was taken when I got it and the others are of its current state. It does definitely have some inhabitants now even though I'm sure it's not at the best possible place (it's in the corner of the balcony) and it should be moved. Besides buying one, you could also make your own bug hotel. You can find instruction on Youtube, for example.

Mallorcalta tuoduista siemenistä itäneitä kasveja. Näiden lisäksi ainakin yksi unikon siemen on itänyt. Some of the plants that grew from seeds we got from Mallorca in May. Besides these ones there's at least one poppy but it's very little still.

Syysleimu, kallionauhus, liljoja, malva ja kultapalloja puutarhassa elokuussa. Ympäri puutarhaa oli kesällä myös vesiastioita siileille ja muille pikkueläimille.  Fall phlox, summer ragwort, lilies, mallow and goldball in the garden in August. I also put water containers around the garden in the summer for hedgehogs and other small animals.
